Tuesday 26th January 2016 – The Harbour’s involvement in D-day

On Tuesday 26th of January, David Warhust  spoke to us at Parkstone Yacht Club about Poole Harbour’s involvement in D-day.
David’s talk gave us a good insight into the planning and build-up to D-Day involving Poole Harbour and the surrounding area.

Studland Bay was visited by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Generals  Montgomery and Eisenhower and by King George VI. They were all watching demonstrations of setting the sea alight with fuel oil and the practice D-Day landings, complete with swimming tanks.  PLUTO [Pipe Line Under the Ocean] to feed fuel to Europe for use by the Allied Forces and the Mulberry Harbour were all shown and the Large fleet of boats waiting in the Harbour to cross to Normandy on June 6th 1944.
It was a well illustrated talk enjoyed by members.
